Flaxseed and Cinnamon Instant Oatmeal

I updated this post on homemade instant oatmeal. I accidentally deleted my original post, but I am predating it to the original post date. So sorry for any inconvenience.

I love the convenience of this healthy recipe that all of the family members from the smallest to the tallest can quickly prepare on their own in the morning. We love it year round, but it's especially helpful during the school year for quick self-serve breakfasts. I often will mix this up and take it with me to work.  I just put it in a plastic container and stick it into my teaching bag to eat while I look over the teacher's instructions for the day. It's quicker than eating cold cereal and healthier than most cold cereals.

Updated Notes
This instant oatmeal is not presweetened so it can easily be adapted to be made just the way you like it. Brown sugar, honey, maple syrup, stevia, raisins–whatever your preferred sweetener can be added to your oatmeal.

I have also recently discovered that I could boil peeled, diced apples with the water and have perfectly tender apples in my oatmeal as well. Simply boil the water with apples an additional 30 seconds in the microwave after the mixture has started to boil (longer if you like really tender apples). In my microwave it takes 2 1/2 minutes. However you like oatmeal this quick method is a winner.

Recipe adapted from recipe on Money Saving Mom
1 large canister of quick oats (42 oz, 1.19 kg)
1 large canister of old fashioned rolled oats (42 oz, 1.19 kg)
1/4-1/3 c cinnamon
2 c milled flax seed

Blend 1 cup of quick oats and 1 cup of old fashioned rolled oats in a food processor until the oats are the consistency of flour. Add milled flax seed and cinnamon to the oat mixture and blend long enough to combine all ingredients.

Combine all ingredients in batches and mix thoroughly. I like to pour 1/4 of each container of oats into an 8 cup measuring cup and 1 cup of powdered mixture and mix with a large spoon. I then pour the mixture into an empty oatmeal container using a paper funnel. Repeat mixing process until all ingredients are finished.

I like to leave a 1/4 cup measuring cup inside of the container for easy measuring. For a normal sized serving use 1/2 cup (2 scoops) and for a generous serving use 3/4 cup (3 scoops). Mark the amounts on the top of the container as a reminder of how to prepare.

Cooking Instructions
to 1/2 c of oatmeal mixture, add 2/3+ c boiling water
to 3/4 c oatmeal mixture, add 1+ c boiling water
Stir in desired sweetener and/or fruit

  1. My family loves this. I now like to take it camping as well. I heat up the water in an electric tea kettle. It is a lot faster and less cleanup than cooking a batch of oatmeal in a pot. Love it!
